INVESTIGATING UNDERGRADUATE EFL STUDENTS’ ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY: ITS GENERIC STRUCTURE AND LANGUAGE FEATURES

Abstract


This research is about investigating undergraduate EFL students’ argumentative essay especially in the aspects of generic structure and language features. As far known, argumentative is the most or common type of essay that is studied by plenty undergraduate EFL students across the world (Mei, 2006), and the indicators of successful argumentative essay is through the correct generic structure as well as suitable or sufficient language features that writer used. However, in Indonesia context, many of them failed to write argumentative essay well (Rahmatunisa, 2014; Saputra et al., 2021; Situmorang et al., 2020; Turmudi, 2020). Hence, it is necessary to find the information of why they got problems in writing argumentative essay by investigating first the quality of their argumentative, then to explore more the factors behind their issue. 30 students aged 18-21 were participated in this research who had learned and experienced in argumentative writing. The researchers applied qualitative descriptive approach with the use of argumentative test and interview as instruments. The result indicated 13 from 30 participants truly failed to write argumentative essay with incorrect generic structure and insufficient language features. There were 3 dominant factors that students exposed related to the unsuccessful argumentative writing they made such as students’ factor themselves, teacher’s factor, and theory factor.
